  • What should be the capacity of my microwave?

The answer depends on the size of your family and the eating habits of your family members. I have a family of 5 so I need a microwave with big capacity. If you cook a lot of non-vegetarian food, you might need an even bigger capacity and more room in your microwave. Indian microwaves are available with a capacity of 17 to 42 Ltr. You might have a smaller nuclear family of 2 or 3 so have a look at the chart below to see what the best capacity of microwave is for your family.

Family size Ideal Capacity in Ltr.
    2 to 3 17 to 20
    3 to 5 21 to 25
    5 to 8 28 to 35
    8+ 36+

For cooking non-vegetarian dishes: You should consider taking Greater than 21 Ltr. microwave oven, for a family size of 3 to 5 so that you can accommodate large portions of chicken/mutton while cooking.
  • What are the types of control panels in a Microwave?

Since I’m working, I’m always in a rush to finish my cooking. My microwave has to be very easy to use and so the control panel is a very crucial element of the microwaves for me. The easier it is to use, the faster your cooking gets done. There are 4 types of controls.
    • Mechanical controls: Most modern microwaves don’t have mechanical knob like controls because they are outdated. These are mostly used in Cheaper models & used in offices mostly .
    • Touch Key Pad Controls: These are flat and aesthetically good looking. However, be warned that Indian kitchens accumulate a lot of smoke and dust. This will cause Carbon accumulation making it difficult for your microwave to run smoothly. This will also shorten their life span and will have to be repaired with a cost ranging from Rs. 1500 to Rs. 2000.
    • Tact Buttons & Electronic Jog Wheel: The dial (similar looking to the mechanical dials) is given electronic circuits to function like the touch key-pad and yet they do not get affected by the smoky and dusty Indian kitchen conditions. The dial is very easy-to-use and allows you to multi-task while cooking in the kitchen. Even with hands dirtied by dough and other cooking activities you can still use the Jog-Wheel controls to use the microwave oven without spoiling the unit.
    • Feather Touch control: This is the latest innovative control system for microwaves which can sense your fingers just like a touch-screen phone. However they do come at a heavier purchasing and maintenance cost than the jog dial microwaves.
  • What setting options should be available in my microwave?

    • Auto cook menus: If you have enjoyed cooking on a stove previously but are not familiar with how to transfer your skills to microwave cooking , auto cook menus are ideal for you. These are pre-programmed buttons that help you cook a particular recipe faster. Our Black Beauty Power Barbeque 28 comes equipped with 123 Indian auto cook menus.
    • Power Levels: Like the high, medium and low flame levels on a gas stove, power levels in a microwave enable you to cook at various power settings.
    • Multistage cooking: This setting allows you to cook at different power levels for different lengths of time adding great flexibility to your cooking habits. For instance if you want to defrost and grill vegetables or a chicken you can choose multiple settings and run them all together. You can set a defrost option for 2 mins then the grill for 5 mins and then a micro option for 3 mins and when you’re ready just press start and the microwave will cook everything in the same sequence. This will give you the freedom to do other work while the microwave executes sequential cooking.
    • No. of Combo settings (Only in Grill and Convection): Combo setting allows you to use 2 or 3 different functions of the microwave together e.g. solo + grill, solo + convection, solo + grill + convection. The more combo settings on your microwave, the more variety of dishes you can make.
    • Temperature settings: Having more temperature settings on your microwave means that you can cook variety of Baking dishes at different temperatures as per the requirements of individual recipes.
    • Defrost : Frozen foods require defrosting to bring them to normal
    • Preset Start Timer: Foods like chicken needs time for marinating. With a preset start timer, you can set a start time so that the cooking begins exactly when the marinating is complete.
  • What setting options should be available in my microwave?

    • Calorie meter : This feature, added especially for the new health conscious to stay fit, shows you approximately how many calories each meal you are cooking contains.
    • Turntable size : The bigger the turntable, the better it is to keep large vessels inside which makes cooking Indian dishes, easier. .

This will help you keep track of what's cooking in your microwave.

Especially in a family where everyone has different lifestyles and eating schedules you can use this setting to avoid reheating & keep the fresh aroma of foods intact .
